Jim and Susie's Story
Jim and Susie are thinking about buying a new home so that their home will meet their family's needs better. They begin to look around at houses and most of what they look at appear to have been produced by a "cookie cutter". Each house they look at has some things they like and other things they don't like. Some of the houses have extravagancies that they think are a waste of money while other houses are missing some of the nice things that they want to have. None of the houses have the exact floor plan that they want.
Faced with this conflict, Jim and Susie start looking at hiring a builder to custom build a home. The first builder they visit builds more than 100 homes per year and Jim and Susie are surprised to find that the builder is very inflexible regarding options. Essentially with this builder they will end up with a cookie cutter home because the builder knows what he can make the most money from and does not want to venture into other areas. Jim and Susie figure out that this is not really the type of builder they are looking for.
Next Jim and Susie start looking for someone who claims to be a custom builder -- and who truly can custom build to suit their needs. They locate a few local custom builders and meet with them to discuss some options. There is one they are really interested in and they ask to see some examples of his previous work. They go to look at the examples and find the quality to be alright, but are concerned that this smaller builder might not really have the resources to make sure that their project is completed right. They are concerned that if something were to drastically go wrong on the project, this smaller company might just walk away from the project.
